Director’s Note

It is fitting that tonight’s production takes place during the worst days of the cold and flu season. The existence of invisible and resistant viruses floating through our shared space serves as an apt metaphor for tonight’s tragic tale. At its core, Othello reminds us of our mutual susceptibility to infection. Healthy and beautiful bodies—such as romantic love, or service to our country, or friendship—can easily become infected with contaminants of insecurity, jealously, and obsession. The Greeks believed that attending tragedy helped to purge us of these negative qualities.

In this spirit, may tonight’s production provide us with awareness and resistance to the viruses—the sins—that plague our physical, psychological and spiritual well-being. As witnesses to the contagions of human frailty infecting Othello and others, may we all be a little more pure.
